Assessment

The Assessment team helps ensure that every student’s learning is understood and supported. We coordinate district and state assessments that provide valuable information about student progress and help teachers tailor instruction to meet individual needs.

Our goal is to make assessment data meaningful and easy to understand for families, educators, and school leaders. We believe that when assessment information is used thoughtfully, it helps every student grow and succeed.

What We Do

  • Coordinate district and state assessments for all grade levels
  • Support schools in using assessment results to guide teaching and learning
  • Provide clear, accurate information about student progress
  • Ensure that assessments are fair, reliable, and aligned with learning standards

Requesting an Assessment Opt-Out

Parents and guardians have the right to request that their child be excused from state tests. In Wisconsin, parents/guardians may opt their child out of required state assessments under the Wisconsin State Assessment System in grades 4, 8, and 9-11, per Wis. Stats. 118.30(2)(b)3. Requests for other grades or local school or classroom assessments may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

If a parent/guardian would like to request an opt-out:

  1. Contact your child's principal. The principal or school leader is the designated person who handles and approves all opt-out requests.
  2. Submit your request in writing. A written note or email is required.
  3. Wait for confirmation. The school will review the request and provide information once it is approved.

Requests for an opt-out must be submitted and approved annually.

Please note: Teachers and other staff cannot submit opt-out requests for families or encourage families to opt out. All requests must come directly from the parent or guardian to the principal.
