Charter School Audits

To aid external auditors complete the charter school contract required audits, OAE-Audit Services has prepared auditor opinion templates, audit guidelines and minimum audit requirement aids for instrumentality and non-instrumentality charter school audits.

The Milwaukee Public Schools district (District) includes public schools established and operating under contract known as charter schools. A charter school can be a District instrumentality charter school or a non-instrumentality charter school. The contract between the District and the charter school operator includes contractual obligations for financial and performance compliance audits as well as overall contract compliance. The charter school operator may contract with OAE-Audit Services or an independent certified public accountant (external auditor) to perform these required audits.

Audits performed by OAE-Audit Services are presented to the Board and Administration for review upon completion. Audits completed by external auditors are reviewed by Contracted School Services and OAE-Audit Services staff for completeness.

External Auditor Aid Documents

These aids are intended to be comprehensive. Individual school contracts may vary or have different requirements, for example, based upon the grade levels of the school’s students. Please refer to the charter school’s contract, appendices and relevant contract amendments for school-specific contractual obligations and standards.

OAE-Audit Services will update these aids periodically and as needed.
