Lead Reports and Plan

Milwaukee Public Schools and Our Efforts to Keep Students and Employees Safe

At Milwaukee Public Schools, our highest priority is the health and safety of our students and employees. We are committed to proactively identifying and addressing issues related to lead, including those that may not have been properly addressed in the past.

Paint

The district is working with the Milwaukee Health Department and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to address all areas of concern regarding lead paint identified at our schools. Our Department of Facilities and Maintenance Services is contracting with a professional Construction Management company to expedite our work and ensure compliance with local and state health departments.

MPS assumes lead paint exists in any building in Milwaukee—be it a school, home, or business—that was constructed before 1978, the year lead paint was banned. Those built before 1950 are thought to have a higher likelihood of lead paint because its use became less common after that time. Elementary students face greater potential risks from lead. With these items in mind, and physical reviews of MPS school buildings, the district identified schools with the greatest needs and related goals.

The MPS Department of Facilities and Maintenance Services has a lead-based paint compliance program within the MPS Environmental Health and Safety Manual. The program will be updated as needed.

Program as of January 2024: Section 21 - Lead-Based Paint

Water

  • Drinking water sources in MPS are filtered to ensure that lead levels in water are below EPA drinking water standards.
  • Lead lateral lines leading to schools from city of Milwaukee water mains were replaced in 2016.
  • Drinking fountains that had parts containing lead were shut down, and new drinking fountains with water filters were installed. Water filters are replaced regularly.

Free Lead-Screening Clinics for MPS Students
