Girls of Color
The Department of Gender and Identity Inclusion (GII) is dedicated to the overall success and achievement of girls of color in Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS).
We have the unique opportunity to create programs, offer professional development opportunities, and connect resources to the district all in support of the advancement of our youth.
Data highlights that girls of color experience school discipline, sexual assault, adverse childhood traumas, and other social-emotional challenges at alarming disproportionate rates compared to their white counterparts. Schools may contact the Department of Gender and Identity Inclusion (GII) for affirming support, resources, and programming for their students, as well as professional development for staff, teachers and administration. The program coordinator is also available to:
- Serve as a resource, consultant, and liaison to administrative teams and school communities
- Support schools, teachers, and support staff in implementation of professional development opportunities specifically related to understanding, supporting, and empowering girls of color
- Train staff members on how to create and implement a strong program/group at a school
