At Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), the Department of Student Discipline addresses equity and focuses on creating a positive educational climate.
We build relationships and collaborate with students, families, and staff members to foster an environment where all students can learn and thrive.
What We Do

Our department is responsible for:
- Integrating the Five Universal Supports for School Climate districtwide
- Monitoring disciplinary practices and ensuring due process documentation
- Coaching MPS staff members on student behavior and school climate best practices
- Providing professional development on a variety of topics
- Facilitating Courageous Conversations About Race and other equity seminars
- Implementing the District Attendance Plan and the Culture, Climate, and Alternatives to Suspension Toolkit
- Organizing Student Leadership Summits and Student Growth Committees
Our Impact
- 10,000+ staff members trained through Courageous Conversations About Race
- 300+ students attending the Student Leadership Summit each year
- Measurable changes during the 2024–25 school year
- More than 1,000 fewer behavior referrals in comparison to the previous year (2023–24)
- More than 500 fewer suspensions
