Administrators and Administrative Staff
Administrative positions range from school-based leadership positions (such as principals and assistant principals) to Central Services roles in one of the many Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) departments. These positions are posted for internal and external applicants.
Hiring Process
1. Application: All interested candidates should complete the online application. Each candidate is required to submit their current resume and conferred degree transcripts for the position’s required degree (bachelor's or master's).
2. References Check: Qualified candidates will be asked to submit contact information for three professional references who will offer their feedback electronically.
3. First Interview: Candidates chosen for interviews will participate in a first-level interview, which may be conducted virtually. This is a panel interview with four to five panel members.
4. Second Interview: Successful candidates will generally have a second interview that involves a smaller panel that includes the leader of their department.
5. Board Approval: Once a candidate has been selected for hire, they must be approved by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors prior to their appointment being official.
Hiring and Licensure for School-Based Leaders
In addition to the current resume and transcript(s) required for administrative positions, there are additional requirements for principals and assistant principals:
- Administrators are required to hold valid administrator licenses for the area of instruction they are assigned to. For example, principals and assistant principals should hold #5051 licenses.
- Assistant principals must submit written responses to questions at the time of application.
- Interviewees for principal positions must develop and present a slideshow during their interview.
Newly hired or newly promoted administrators should apply for the One-Year Board-Requested Administrator License, which can potentially be renewed/extended for a second year. This provides time for them to enroll in an approved administrator preparation program and complete all program requirements.
Administrators relocating to Wisconsin from other states should review DPI’s information about out-of-state licensing.
