Substitute Teacher Incentive Program
Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) offers a monthly substitute teacher incentive to all eligible day-to-day substitute teachers in the district.
MPS is committed to recruiting and retaining the best support staff to educate and engage our students, families, and communities. To ensure that every classroom is fully staffed, the Office of Human Resources offers a substitute teacher incentive program.
Beginning in January 2024, substitute teachers who accept and report for assignments on 90% of student attendance days in a month will receive an additional taxable payment of $500 per month. Substitute teachers must work in the assignment for a full day (6.5 hours per day or more).
Program Information
How many full days do I need to substitute teach in a month to receive the incentive?
It depends on the number of school days that month. For example, in a month with 20 school days, substitute teachers would need to teach 18 days. When the required number of days (90%) results in a fraction, the number is rounded down.
Who is eligible for the incentive?
All MPS substitute teachers, except benefit-eligible substitute teachers, are eligible when subbing in full-day assignments of 6.5 hours or more per day.
Do I have to substitute teach at one school, or can I substitute at multiple schools?
As long as you work as a substitute teacher for 90% of the student attendance days in the month, you will be eligible for the additional taxable payment. You may serve at multiple MPS schools.
If I meet the requirement for substitute teacher long-term pay, am I eligible for the monthly incentive?
Yes, you are.
How will the incentive appear on my paycheck?
The additional taxable payment of $500 per month will appear as a separate line on a subsequent paycheck.
