Pathways to Teaching
To become a teacher with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), you must have or obtain a valid license for the subject(s) and grade level(s) you're teaching.
Teachers are in demand nationwide, and Wisconsin is no exception. MPS is looking for talented people who are passionate about education and want to help children develop their full potential.
Becoming a Licensed Teacher
If you’re thinking about starting college or already have some credits, you can enroll at an accredited institution of higher learning to complete a bachelor’s degree in education. If you already have a bachelor’s degree, you can consider a wider range of educator preparation programs (EPPs).
Here’s how to find a program and get licensed through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI):
1. Decide what subject(s) you are interested in teaching, as well as which grade level(s).
2. Use DPI’s Find a Preparation Program tool to choose an EPP for the teaching license you are seeking. If you do not yet have a bachelor's degree, look for colleges and universities with undergraduate programs listed.
3. Contact the EPP directly to learn more, apply, and enroll in their program.
4. Complete all required coursework (credit requirements vary) and license requirements.
5. Apply for your license using DPI's ELO System.
Teaching at MPS While Earning Your License
If you dream of teaching and already have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, you don’t have to wait to enter the classroom. You can teach at MPS while you earn your credentials!

- Maintain communication and meet all DPI and MPS requirements.
- Enroll in an approved educator preparation program or alternative route program.
- Provide proof of enrollment by the end of your first semester as a teacher.
- Maintain enrollment until you complete all licensing requirements.
- Notify MPS if you switch programs.
- Make progress and complete all license requirements within three school years.
- Complete at least six credits per year (EPP) or meet all program milestones (alternative route).
