Grow Your Own (GYO) Program

Calling 2026 MPS high school graduates! Enjoy working with children? Start your career in education today.

Your Career Roadmap: From Para to Teacher

The GYO program allows you to work 15–30 hours per week while attending college in the Milwaukee area. You will gain hands-on experience supporting student learning side-by-side with expert classroom teachers.

Graduate from an MPS high school.
Work as a GYO paraprofessional while earning your degree.
Earn your bachelor's degree and apply for a teaching career with MPS.

Starting Pay

$20.39 per hour

Universal Program Benefits (15–29 Hours/Week)

Real-world, on-the-job experience in the field of education
Blend of K–12 classroom experience with university learning
One-on-one advising with a Development Specialist
Free tutoring services for paraprofessionals pursuing teacher education

Requirements

Age: 18+
Education: High school diploma
College Enrollment: Current or prospective student (Fall 2026/Spring 2027)
Testing: Passing score on the Para Pro Assessment for basic skills in math, reading, and writing
