State school-finance expert will be MPS’s new deputy chief financial officer
  • News Release

Milwaukee Public Schools welcomes Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction school-finance authority Jennifer Buros as its new deputy chief financial officer, Superintendent Brenda Cassellius, EdD, has announced.

Ms. Buros, currently director for DPI’s Bureau of School Financial Services, begins her new role with MPS on August 3.

“Her work with DPI was instrumental in helping MPS to improve its financial controls and in holding the district accountable as we worked to complete past-due audits. I’m pleased that Ms. Buros will bring her expertise in school finances and her dedication to public education to the Office of Finance at Milwaukee Public Schools,” Dr. Cassellius said. “Ms. Buros’s deep knowledge of MPS’s finances and school finance makes her the perfect addition to our finance team and ready to start on day one.”

As of January 2026, all three past-due MPS financial audits have been completed and submitted to the state.

Ms. Buros’s duties with DPI have included overseeing school finance reporting, district auditing and accounting requirements, and state aid for schools; directing the collection of school finance data; and ensuring the bureau is in compliance with budgets and policies. She joined DPI in 2023, after working for more than 24 years as a business manager for school districts. Eighteen of those years were with the Westby Area School District.

Ms. Buros is a certified public accountant and previously worked for an accounting firm auditing school districts. She also holds a school business administrator license.

"While I am sorry to see Jennifer leave the DPI, I am grateful for her outstanding leadership and service to school districts across the state,” said State Superintendent Jill Underly, PhD. “Her expertise and steady guidance were instrumental in helping Milwaukee Public Schools navigate some very challenging times, while also strengthening support to districts statewide. Milwaukee is gaining an exceptional leader, and I have no doubt that she will continue making a meaningful impact."

At MPS, Ms. Buros will assist Chief Financial Officer Aycha Sawa. The Office of Finance is responsible for the district’s financial planning; monitoring of the annual budget; central office and school accounting; financial reporting to the Milwaukee Board of School Directors and to the state; coordinating the annual external audit; overseeing payroll, procurement and risk management; and ensuring district compliance with state and federal grants.
