MPS Reads
Discover recommended books for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) students of all ages.
In support of our Ambitious Instruction Plan for reading, each month we will feature suggested titles for pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students. Our goals are:
- To assist teachers, librarians, parents, and others in finding interesting books that will encourage and excite students to read more literature and informational text
- To suggest titles that allow students to see themselves, explore other cultures, and discover more about the world in which they live
- To increase the volume of books that students are reading independently and ignite a passion for reading
February 2026 Selections
Titles include The Humble Pie, CeeCee: Underground Railroad Cinderella, Dragons in a Bag, On Guard!, Lunar New Year Love Story, and Los Bravos.
January 2026 Selections
Titles include American Born Chinese, The First State of Being, Hope in a Jar, The Magical Yet, Twenty-four Seconds from Now, and La última cuentista.
December 2025 Selections
Titles include Me encanta la nieve; Under the Neon Lights; Pizza Face; Johnny, the Sea, and Me; Abuelita and Me; and A Day in the Snow with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
November 2025 Selections
Titles include Chooch Helped, My Powerful Hair, Heroes of the Water Monster, Looking for Smoke, and Donde los arboles cantan.
October 2025 Selections
Titles include My Abuela Is a Bruja, Sundust, Cousins in the Time of Magic, Danilo Was Here, Very Dangerous Things, and Alberto Salas juega a la paka paka con la papa.
September 2025 Selections
Titles include The Day the Crayons Made Friends, Wish in a Tree, Sammy and Sunny's First Day of School, Troublemaker, Not Nothing, and Paletero Man ¡Que Paletero tan Cool!
August 2025 Selections
Titles include All About Color, Lola, Star Child, Don't Ask Me Where I'm From, Antes de ser libres, and Batter Up for the First Day of School!
July 2025 Selections
Titles include Papilio; City Summer, Country Summer; Merci Suarez Can't Dance; Threads That Bind; and La maleta de tesoros.
June 2025 Selections

May 2025 Selections
Titles include Tiny Feet Between the Mountains, Home in a Lunchbox, Finally Heard, Tricky Chopsticks, The Many Masks of Andy Zhou, La trenza o el viaje de Lalita, and Gigi Shin Is Not a Nerd.
April 2025 Selections

March 2025 Selections
