Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Through hands-on career pathways and real-world work experiences, Career and Technical Education (CTE) in Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) equips students with the skills needed for success in college, careers, and beyond. 

At MPS, we offer:   

  • Career pathways with introductory through advanced courses to prepare students for a wide range of high-wage, high-skill, high-demand careers 
  • Work-based learning programs (including internships and youth apprenticeships) that align with classroom instruction and prepare students for the workforce 
  • Dual enrollment options for students to earn high school and college credit simultaneously 
  • Industry-recognized credentials that prove our students have necessary job skills 
  • Career and technical student organizations to develop student leadership and showcase these skills 
  • Modern technology and resources in classrooms 
  • Professional development and training to strengthen teacher effectiveness and content expertise 

CTE in MPS: At a Glance

Based on 2024–25 data about CTE students:

3,187 students in grades 11–12 are CTE concentrators

1,799 are earning college credit

Through dual enrollment courses

1,188 are preparing for future jobs

Through industry-recognized credential opportunities

834 are getting real-world experience

Through internships or youth apprenticeships

Based on 2023–24 student performance indicators for CTE students:

89% earn a high school diploma in four years

37% choose CTE pathways for gender nontraditional fields

Such as girls in STEM

90% are employed or enrolled in college, career training, the military, or public service

Within nine months of high school graduation

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Training and Certification 

In collaboration with Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), current MPS students can earn college credit and acquire their CNA certification through in-school labs and courses. Courses are currently offered at Alexander Hamilton High School, James Madison Academic Campus, and South Division High School. Classes will be available at North Division High School starting in Fall 2026.

Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) 

Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) support CTE students and help them develop career knowledge and important skills, including communication, leadership, and teamwork, as well as technical skills. They also offer students an opportunity to participate in activities, events, and competitions.   

MPS offers support for these student organizations:
