GED Option #2 (GEDO #2)

GED Option #2 (GEDO #2) programs offer at-risk students the opportunity to earn their high school diplomas through successful completion of standardized GED content exams.

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is authorized by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to operate school-based GEDO #2 programs.

GED exams are offered in four subjects: English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Based on their results of approved GED practice tests, students prepare through a blended model of online curriculum and personalized support from licensed teachers. They also learn employability skills and financial literacy in partnership with MPS College and Career Centers.

Program Information and Requirements

  • Students who demonstrate a ninth-grade reading level
  • Students who are 17 years of age and behind in credits

Students must test through ELO to participate. They must also complete the Student Responsibility Contract.

Request Testing

Students and their families will participate in an intake meeting at their new school assignment. During this meeting, they will review transcripts and go over the requirements for program completion.

Community Service Requirement

Young people who participate in meaningful community service experiences are more likely to do well in school, graduate, and become responsible citizens. Youth volunteers can increase self-confidence, learn new skills, explore career options, build a resume, support causes they care about, meet new people, and have fun!

Students enrolled in the MPS GEDO #2 program are required to complete 50 hours of community service (25 hours per semester). Your GED Option #2 instructor will assist you throughout the process of completing this requirement for graduation. For your service to count, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You cannot be paid for community service hours.
  • All service hours must take place outside of academic class time.
  • All hours must be completed with a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or government agency. This could be a school district, library, police department, etc.
  • Your hours must be supervised by an adult at the organization.
  • Your hours may not be part of a criminal justice sanction.
