Seal of Biliteracy

The Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy is an industry-recognized credential awarded to students who have attained proficiency in English and one or more additional languages by high school graduation.

Seal of Biliteracy

Earning the Seal of Biliteracy requires meeting criteria in three areas. This work generally takes several years.

  • English Language Proficiency: A qualifying score on selected assessments that indicates proficiency in reading and writing English
  • Proficiency in Another Language: A qualifying score on an approved exam or qualifying coursework in science or social studies taught in a language other than English or qualifying scores on the Low-Incidence Partner Language Rubric
  • Sociocultural Competency: A predetermined number of cultural activities, clubs, workshops, and/or conferences; students are evaluated through a written essay, presentation, or interview.

The MPS Seal of Biliteracy went through several years of development and is approved by the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). MPS students first earned the Seal of Biliteracy in 2020.
