PLTW and STEM Education

Students in Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) explore STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—through PLTW, a fully developed curriculum intended to increase interest in various fields.

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is a nationally established program that focuses on preparing the future technical and engineering workforce. At MPS, our students participate in PLTW programming to engage in STEM practices, demonstrate their knowledge of the natural and designed worlds, and prepare for success in college, careers, and citizenship within the global marketplace.

Fast Facts: PLTW in MPS

  • 34 MPS schools
  • 9,000+ MPS students for the 2024–25 school year
  • 89% children of color
  • 48% females

Female MPS student participation rates in PLTW significantly exceed national and state rates for participation in STEM education.

PLTW offers programs for elementary school (PLTW Launch), middle school (PLTW Gateway), and high school (PLTW Biomedical Science, PLTW Computer Science, and PLTW Engineering).

Elementary School: PLTW Launch

Each PLTW Launch module engages students in cross-disciplinary activities that spark a lifelong love of learning and builds knowledge and skills in areas like biomedical science, computer science, and engineering.

High School Programs

Select MPS high schools offer programs in biomedical science, computer science, or engineering.

PLTW Biomedical Science

Alexander Hamilton High School
GreenTree Preparatory Academy
Milwaukee Marshall High School
Riverside University High School

In PLTW Biomedical Science, high school students build knowledge and skills by working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs while they develop problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, and collaboration.

Biomedical Science Courses

PLTW Computer Science

Alexander Hamilton High School
Milwaukee High School of the Arts
Milwaukee Marshall High School

Empower your students to become creators of the technology all around them. PLTW Computer Science engages students in collaborative projects that help them develop in-demand computer science knowledge as well as transportable skills such as creative thinking and communication. Whether they are creating an online art gallery or using automation to process and analyze DNA sequence data, PLTW Computer Science students are seeing how their learning connects to the real world.
