Each summer, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) runs Summer Academy, which offers safe, free programming for city of Milwaukee residents in K5 through 12th grade.
A world of adventure starts here! Summer Academy is held at various locations throughout Milwaukee, offering specialty classes in all areas of interest. Course availability and dates, times, and locations are usually announced each spring. Breakfast and lunch are provided for all Summer Academy participants.
Elementary/Middle School Programming (Grades K5–8)
Summer Academy combines academics in an acceleration model for an engaging four-week experience for K5 through eighth-grade students. The Summer Academy curriculum integrates all subject areas with hands-on activities, field trips, and special programs with community partners. Bilingual, English as a second language (ESL), Montessori, and arts programming is provided, as well as summer adventures for various grade levels. Programs include:
- Science of Design: These academic skill-building and career-planning camps are open to students in grades six through eight. Participants are involved in high-interest, project-based programs over four weeks.
- Extended Learning Adventures: With the support of our community partners, students experience new subjects that encourage their curiosity and further their learning. They identify new interests and abilities, gain real-world experience, and prepare for future success.
Childcare camps, community learning centers, and Safe Places are available for before- and after-program care. Fees may apply; contact Milwaukee Recreation at (414) 475-8180 for more information.
Grade 8 Promotional Program (MPS students only)
The Grade 8 Promotional Program ensures that MPS students gain the necessary skills to be successful in their high school transition through skill-building camps. It is recommended for students who will require academic intervention to make the transition. Students must meet criteria for this program and must be recommended by their school administrator. Each student’s current school needs to submit the required retention documentation. Please contact your child's school to learn more about participation in this program.
High School Programming (Grades 9–12)
For high school students, Summer Academy includes the opportunity to take specialty credit-acceleration courses and to participate in internships. Additional programs include:
- College 101: Students are exposed to dual enrollment courses at Marquette University, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM). Students earn both high school and college credits.
- Credit Recovery: Students who have failed courses are able to catch up on credits during the summer. Those participating in GED Option #2 and competency-based programs who have two or fewer requirements left for graduation can also participate.
- Virtual Summer Night School Program: Qualifying students in grades 11 and 12 who are working or attending pre-college programs during the day can access virtual evening programming.

Community Assessment Training Program (CATP) and On-the-Job Training (OJT)
These school-to-work transition programs prepare students with special education needs for the transition from school to the adult world of work and community living. High school students have the opportunity to explore a variety of careers while learning appropriate work behaviors. Depending on the needs of the student, some are paired with employees of businesses, and others work together with an MPS special education teacher and a paraprofessional.
Students with special education needs can be enrolled during the summer in two circumstances:
- The student was not able to be involved in job training due to scheduling conflicts during the school year.
- The IEP team decides that the student needs summer placement to maintain skills gained during the year.
Extended School Year (ESY)
Extended School Year (ESY) is part of our Summer Academy offerings for children with special education needs. ESY services are offered for qualifying students during the summer as mandated in their individualized education programs (IEPs).
An IEP team determines eligibility for ESY services based on data-driven decisions regarding possible regression of skills following a period of non-attendance, the amount of time needed for recoupment of skills, recognition of emerging skills, and the severity of the student’s disability as well as other factors.
For students not eligible for ESY services, families are encouraged to explore other Summer Academy options. All students with special needs are welcome to participate. Parents/guardians should contact their school's special education supervisor if they have any questions.
