Mathematics
At Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), students develop a deep understanding and appreciation for meaningful K–12 mathematics.
Mathematics in MPS is built on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. These standards define what students should understand and be able to do in their study of mathematics. In prekindergarten through grade 8, the standards lay a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. These elements support a student's ability to learn and apply more-demanding mathematics concepts and procedures as students progress through high school. This in turn ensures preparation for college and career.
MPS mathematics instruction calls for students to apply mathematics through real-world contexts, building on conceptual understanding of topics balanced with procedural skill and fluency. Students’ abilities to think and reason about mathematics are developed over the course of their study through engaging, appropriate, high-level teaching and learning.
