Social Studies
At Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), the primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. MPS aims to ensure that all students have access to adequate and sustained social studies education, which includes geography, history, civics, economics, and the behavioral sciences. Providing rigorous and engaging high-quality learning experiences for students will enable them to think and act as responsible citizens who make positive contributions to their communities.
