Explore High School

With the greatest variety of schools in the city, we offer educational programs that can't be found anywhere else in Milwaukee.

All MPS schools feature strong college- and career-ready curriculum aligned to the Common Core State Standards, which set goals for what students will learn at each grade level. Our robust specialty schools focus on Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, the arts, bilingual/language immersion, career and technical education (CTE), gifted and talented classes, and more. MPS is also home to the nation’s largest number of public Montessori schools.

Our exclusive Learning Journeys connect classroom curriculum to hands-on experiences for MPS students at the region’s best educational resources, including Discovery World, Junior Achievement, and more. All of our schools offer art, music, and physical education.

Successful implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) has reinforced positive behaviors and resulted in healthier school climates—and we have extensive security protocols that continue to make our schools a safe place for students.

MPS Elementary Schools

Creating building blocks for success

Elementary schools put students on the path to academic success through extended literacy blocks to build and reinforce reading skills; rigorous instruction in core subjects; and access to art, music, physical education, and technology. Many elementary schools also offer mentoring, tutoring, character development, and leadership opportunities to strengthen interpersonal and social development.

Families may want to consider grade spans when selecting an elementary school. K–5 schools are good for families who want their child to transition to a middle school, while K–8 schools allow students to stay in one setting until high school.

MPS Middle Schools

Inspiring students and getting them ready for high school

Our middle schools expose students to higher-level coursework and a variety of extracurricular activities that prepare them for the rigors of high school. Whether students are learning in K–8, 6–8, or 6–12 schools, families can find the right environment to match their children’s abilities.

MPS middle schools contain the nation’s largest concentration of students participating in Project Lead the Way (PLTW). This innovative and nationally recognized program provides instruction in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and PLTW students strongly outperform district averages on standardized tests.

MPS High Schools

Preparing for college and career success

Did you know that MPS is home to eight of the top high schools in the state? Our high schools provide the rigorous, college- and career-ready foundation that students need to succeed beyond graduation. Graduation requirements for MPS students include credits in online learning, service learning, or community service.

From academics and athletics to music, theater, debate, and countless other clubs and enrichment activities, MPS high schools offer a well-rounded education that motivates and inspires learners.

Our high schools offer Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and dual enrollment courses that give students an advantage in higher education. MPS career and technical education (CTE) programs are aligned to the existing labor market and expose students to areas of study like advanced manufacturing, engineering, transportation/automotive, construction/architecture, health, business, information technology, marketing, media/graphics, and urban agriculture.

Through peer mentoring, academic support, and service/leadership opportunities, MPS graduates are prepared to be well-balanced young adults who can pursue college, careers, or other training. We are proud to see our students go on to study, work in, and contribute to our city.
