How to Enroll at MPS
Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) includes more than 140 school options—serving nearly 75,000 students—for families to choose from.
We know that choosing a school may be overwhelming, which is why we’ve made it easy to enroll once you’ve made your decision.
Immediate Enrollment for the Current School Year
Immediate enrollment is available for children who need a school placement for the current school year. This includes:
- Children who have recently moved to Milwaukee
- Children wishing to transfer into MPS from another district, charter school, or home school
- Children who were not enrolled prior to the start of the new school year

Fall Enrollment for the 2026–27 School Year
Specific time periods have been set up to enroll students who are entering kindergarten, middle school (grade six), or high school (grade nine) in the fall semester of the upcoming school year. Students who are enrolled during this period have a better chance of being placed in their first-choice school.
Kindergarten
Priority Enrollment Window: January 31–March 2, 2026
Once the kindergarten enrollment period ends, some schools may still have open seats. These seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis from April 1 to August 1.

Middle School (Grade 6)
Applications for sixth graders open on January 31, 2026. The application will include K–8 schools and traditional middle schools (6–8).
High School (Grade 9)
Priority Enrollment Window: October 4–November 7, 2025
High school enrollment takes place in October and November each year. For students who miss the application deadline, they can apply from February 1 to August 1. If seats are available, they will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

All Other Grades
Enrollment Window: February 7–August 31, 2026
If your child attends an MPS school, they will automatically be re-enrolled for the next school year—you do NOT need to re-enroll each year. If your child is in the top grade of their school (grade five in a K–5 school or grade eight in a K–8 or 6–8 school), you will need to select a middle or high school for fall and follow the enrollment steps.
