Interventions for Students: Multi-Level System of Supports (MLSS)

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) use a multi-level system of support (MLSS) to make sure students thrive academically and behaviorally.

We address student academics and behavior using approaches that involve three tiers of support for students.

Academic Supports for Students (Formerly Known as RtI)

The multi-level system of support (MLSS) framework uses data-driven processes to identify and support students who are struggling academically. We offer universal instruction for all students, targeted interventions for those not meeting expectations, and intensive interventions for students needing individualized help. The MLSS process includes screening, diagnosing needs, matching interventions, implementing support, monitoring progress, and evaluating effectiveness to ensure students receive the help they need to succeed.

Behavior: Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework is designed to improve school culture, reduce disruptions, and enhance academic achievement through data-driven, tiered interventions. For all students, we emphasize behavioral expectations, offer ongoing behavior lessons, and encourage positive behavior through recognition systems. For students who need more support with their behavior, Tier 2 interventions are targeted, proven supports, and Tier 3 involves intensive, individualized strategies for those with the most significant behavioral challenges. This approach to addressing and improving student behavior fosters a consistent, positive school environment that benefits both students and staff.
