Legal Assistance and Other Support

If you’re looking for help with immigration issues, legal questions, or access to free or low-cost aid, these national and local organizations offer legal assistance, advocacy, and supportive services in the Milwaukee area.

MPS does not provide legal advice to students or families, but the following resources may be helpful to undocumented immigrants, immigrants, and refugees living in Milwaukee County. By posting here, MPS is not endorsing any organization but rather making resources available for families to review on their own.

American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA)

This professional association offers a searchable directory that can be used to find an immigration attorney. Users can search by state, ZIP code, type of lawyer, or language spoken. Note: AILA does not provide legal advice, recommendations, mediation, or counseling. 

Immigration Law Help

This searchable directory includes more than 1,000 free or low-cost nonprofit immigration legal services providers in all 50 states, including Wisconsin. Only nonprofits that are recognized by the Board of Immigration Appeals (or those with recognized attorneys on staff) are included. Users can search by state, ZIP code, or detention facility.

Catholic Charities’ mission is to “provide service to those in need, to advocate for justice, and to call upon others to do the same.” They offer a wide range of services: adoption services, adult day services, community counseling, hoarding intervention and treatment, outreach and case management services, pregnancy and parenting support, refugee and immigration services, and supported parenting services. 

Hanan Refugee Relief Group (HRRG)

HRRG helps refugees become contributing members of their host communities by providing short- and long-term solutions, including housing, labor opportunities, and medical relief. 

International Institute of Wisconsin

James Place Immigration Services (South Side)

The James Place staff and volunteers provide services for immigrants and refugees settling on the South Side of Milwaukee. Services include legal advice and assistance in filing applications (by appointment).

The Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee provides equal access to legal representation, offering legal services at no cost to more than 6,000 eligible individuals and families each year. Legal Aid specializes in civil matters involving housing security, guardianship, consumer protection, financial health, civil rights, and immigration. 

Lutheran Social Services (LSS)

As the Wisconsin affiliate of Global Refuge (formerly Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service), Lutheran Social Services (LSS) provides comprehensive resettlement services to refugees fleeing from war and persecution. LSS has the capacity to welcome and resettle 500 refugees per year within a 50-mile radius of Milwaukee or Madison. The program provides services like initial housing, food, clothing, school enrollment for children, English lessons, and assistance with job placement.

One of the main services that the consulate offers is documentation, including passports, consular IDs, and voter registration cards. They also offer legal advice for Mexican nationals.

Voces de la Frontera specializes in worker’s rights and immigration matters, offering legal clinics, citizenship classes, support for immigrant families facing detention/deportation, and much more.
