Safety Scans

As part of our commitment to safe, welcoming learning environments, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is introducing higher‑tech daily safety scans in all high schools and traditional middle schools.

How the Scanners Work

Students and families, watch a short video created by MPS students at Audubon Technology and Communication Center to learn what to expect from the new scanners.

Privacy Protections

These systems do NOT use facial recognition, collect student data, or include any surveillance technology. If necessary, schools will be able to adjust the scanner’s sensitivity to identify additional items not permitted on school grounds.

Why We Are Upgrading

Unfortunately, incidents across the country—including one in Wisconsin in 2024—continue to highlight the dangers that weapons pose in school settings. School safety is a responsibility we take seriously, and our technology upgrade is one of several layers of protection we use to keep our schools safe. The new scanning systems use the same technology as major sporting events and concerts, offering a faster and more efficient screening process while maintaining strong safety standards.

Why We Chose These Scanners

MPS students have shared concerns about traditional scanning methods—particularly the intrusive experience of unpacking their bags and the long lines that often make them late for class. Our new scanning technology directly addresses these issues:

  • Backpacks can stay on during the daily scan.
  • Only a few items, such as laptops or three‑ring binders, need to be removed.
  • The system produces fewer false alarms, making the process smoother and less intimidating.

Overall, students can expect a quicker, more comfortable start to the school day. The short video below reviews the process in comparison to previous technology.

What Families and Students Can Expect Next

For most schools, this is simply a technology upgrade. In buildings that have not previously used daily scanning, principals will offer additional opportunities for families and students to learn about the technology and ask questions. To support a smooth transition, staff from CEIA OPENGATE®, the technology provider, will be available at each school for two days.
