Special Education Liaison for Families (SELF Program)

The Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Special Education Liaison for Families (SELF) Program is designed to support the families of students with special needs.

A Special Education Liaison for Families (SELF) is a parent or guardian of a child with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan. SELF volunteers are available to offer one-on-one assistance to families over the phone, by email, or in person.

They DO:

  • Help you understand and meet your child’s needs
  • Explain IEP services
  • Connect you to community resources

They DON’T:

  • Access your family’s personal information
  • Complete forms for you
  • Attend IEP meetings
  • Serve as your child’s legal parent or guardian—even with your permission

Does your child's school have a designated SELF?

If your student attends one of the schools listed under "Current Schools with a SELF," you'll be connected to your assigned SELF and your school’s parent coordinator. If your student attends another MPS school, our team will be able to answer questions, address concerns, and provide additional support.

Volunteer as a SELF

Are you a current MPS parent or guardian who wants to use your own experience with the special education system to help others? We are always looking for more people to join our amazing team of SELF volunteers! We run trainings in the fall and spring and are expanding our program to more schools every year.

If you’re interested in sharing your time and talents to assist families and make a positive change at your child’s school, click the button below.

About the Wisconsin Statewide Parent Educator Initiative

The Wisconsin Statewide Parent Educator Initiative (WSPEI) is a Department of Public Instruction initiative that supports the MPS SELF Program. This initiative works to create partnerships between families and educators to improve educational opportunities and increase resources for students with disabilities. MPS and WSPEI collaborate to provide support, training, and information to MPS families of children who receive special education services.
