Internships and Summer Employment

Learn how internship programs with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) benefit employers by attracting motivated talent, reducing recruitment costs, and bringing fresh ideas to the workplace.

Types of Employment Opportunities

Internship: This is a one-time work assignment that may be paid or unpaid, depending on the employer and what is required of the student for the position. Most internships offer a stipend.

Summer Employment: This is paid work experience. This type of position may or may not be directly related to the student's curriculum and may or may not be integrated into the academic program.

Internship Information

An internship is a carefully monitored work experience in which a student sets intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what they are learning throughout the experience. Internship specifics can vary depending on your needs:

  • Length: Typical durations of six weeks to nine months; can begin in summer, fall, or spring
  • Hours: Part-time or full-time (after graduation)
  • Compensation: Paid or unpaid
  • Academic Credit: Can be connected to an education program that offers credit, but not required

4 Benefits for Employers

An internship program can be very beneficial for your company or organization.

  1. Internships are an inexpensive tool for the recruitment of diverse employees—and an opportunity to train future employees.
  2. An internship program is a source of highly motivated pre-professionals that can be evaluated while they are working for you. This can reduce costs in finding and retaining new talent.
  3. Interns bring current technology and ideas from the classroom to the workplace, increasing your intellectual capital.
  4. Interns provide an opportunity for mid-level staff to manage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a typical hourly wage for an internship?
An intern's hourly wage can vary depending upon their experience; it typically ranges from $8.00 to $20.00 per hour. If you are unable to budget an hourly wage, consider offering a stipend instead.

How many days a week will my intern work?
Internships are flexible, and a part-time internship can involve anywhere between 10 and 30 hours per week. Students often plan their internships around their schedules. Once you identify an intern candidate, you can discuss their availability and agree on a schedule that will work for both parties.

If I like my intern and want to extend their internship, is that possible?
This is entirely up to you. You may continue an internship and/or extend an offer of future full-time employment once the internship has been completed.
